Course overview

The Master of Education (STEM) will build upon your own foundational STEM skills while gaining a deepened understanding of spatial thinking, STEM pedagogical frameworks and inclusion and wellbeing strategies to enhance teaching practices, student outcomes and student engagement. Units within this course are informed by evidence-based research from the STEM Education Research Centre (SERC) at the University of Canberra.

Working nationally, internationally, and across all school sectors, SERC has successfully delivered over $18.5 million worth of education projects, including work with the federal Department of Education (DoE), the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) and Samsung Australia. This proven track record in applied research ensures students gain relevant, research-informed methods to enrich their teaching practices.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for the Master of Education (STEM), applicants must have:

  • Current registration as a teacher at proficient level or higher with an Australian regulatory authority/registration authority.* OR​
  • A three-year undergraduate degree in Education or relevant field as approved by the University of Canberra, and at least three years' FTE professional experience in education.​ OR​
  • Graduate and/or postgraduate education qualifications as approved by the University of Canberra.

The Master of Education (STEM) has been designed in collaboration with the  STEM Education Research Centre  (SERC). SERC’s research-based STEM methodologies have been developed across school sectors to build contemporary pedagogical frameworks that foster improvements in teaching practices, student outcomes, and student engagement.

For example, evidence from SERC’s highly successful early years STEM program shows that children using the program improve their STEM literacy skills at a rate three times higher (x3) than children not in the program. In numeracy, children improve at a rate twice (x2) that of children not in the program. Educators have also benefited from the program, with research showing that their understanding, interest and confidence in teaching STEM content improved.

No. The UC Postgraduate Online Master of Education (STEM) is for qualified educators and registered teachers who can apply what they learn to their current and future roles in education. Placement is not required.

Yes. With a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), the government will pay a portion of your fees and reduce the overall cost of your course. This subsidy is not a loan and you will not have to pay it back.

Each unit is seven weeks’ long. The University advises a minimum of 15 to 20 hours of online study per week. The master’s course can be completed in as little as 16 months.

Our online accelerated Master of Education (STEM) offers six intakes per year and each study period is seven weeks in total.
